Defendant Ho Si Tan at the trial

According to the indictment, from late 2021 to early 2022, Tan lost money playing virtual currency and had to borrow 150 million VND from others. Because the creditor kept asking for money but had no money to pay, Tan came up with the idea of stealing property to get money to pay off the debt.

At 8:30 p.m. on September 15, 2022, Tan brought a sharp knife about 30 cm long and broke into the house of Mr. Nguyen Tuan K. and Mrs. Nguyen Thi T. (both born in 1960) in the same commune with the intention of stealing money and gold.

When he saw that Mr. K.'s living room was turned off, he could no longer hear the TV and the main door was unlocked, Tan went into the kitchen area on the first floor and then went up to the second floor to search but could not find any property. Returning to the foot of the stairs on the first floor, Tan bumped into a wine can, making a noise.

Representative of the Provincial People's Procuracy presented the indictment

Hearing a noise, Mrs. T. went to check and found Tan, who immediately shouted, "It's here, it's here...". Seeing that, Tan ran to Mrs. T. and used a knife to slash her four times in a row, hitting her head and face. However, Mrs. T. still shouted, "There's a thief," so Tan slashed her again in the back. Mrs. T. got up, ran into the bedroom on the first floor, and locked the door, preventing Tan from entering.

Hearing his wife's screams, Mr. K. ran from the living room. Tan used a knife to repeatedly slash him. Mr. K. grabbed the knife and slashed Tan twice, hitting him in the head and left ear. The two continued to struggle, causing the knife to puncture the rice bag, the rice fell onto the floor, causing Mr. K. to slip and fall, while Tan ran away. The homeowner and his wife were taken to the emergency room, but due to severe injuries, Mr. K. died at noon the next day, and Mrs. T. suffered 44% body damage.

After running away, Tan went to his girlfriend's house in Ngoc Chau ward (Hai Duong city) to change clothes and was taken to the provincial General Hospital to register for examination, but was arrested.

Tan used to be a contract employee at Gia Loc District Radio Station. Defendant Tan has a good character.
