Today, May 22, the High People's Court in Hanoi opened an appeal hearing to consider the appeal of the person involved in the AIC case.

The trial panel (HDXX) consists of 3 people, with Judge Mai Anh Tai presiding over the trial. Representatives of the High People's Procuracy in Hanoi participating in the trial include senior prosecutors Pham Van Hoa and Dao Trong Thuyet.

15/36 defendants filed appeals or had their lawyers and relatives appeal on their behalf. Of these, 4 siblings of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan (Chairwoman of AIC) filed appeals on behalf of the defendants, requesting the appellate court to review the entire investigation, prosecution, and trial process.

Lawyer Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan also appealed to cancel the first instance judgment and transfer the case file for reinvestigation.

In addition to Ms. Nhan, there are 7 other defendants who were identified as having absconded and were tried in absentia by the court of first instance. Lawyers for these people also appealed for leniency for their clients, or requested the appellate court to review the first instance judgment because they believed that the evidence was insufficient and the investigation process was flawed.

Among the 7 defendants mentioned above, Mr. Nguyen Dang Thuyet (Director of Thanh An Hanoi Company) and Ngo The Vinh (Director of Viet Tien Company) directly sent their appeals from the US.

Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Nga (former Deputy General Director of AIC Company) appealed for a review of the verdict. Ms. Nga hoped that the appellate court would re-evaluate her role and argued that the defendant was only an employee. Forced by the court of first instance to pay compensation for damages, Ms. Nga also appealed for a review of this content.

Among the former leaders of Dong Nai province prosecuted in this case, defendant Phan Huy Anh Vu (former Director of the Department of Health, former Director of Dong Nai General Hospital) appealed for a reduced sentence.

Mr. Tran Dinh Thanh (former Secretary of Dong Nai) and Dinh Quoc Thai (former Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee) did not appeal.

As a party with related rights and obligations, AIC Real Estate JSC has filed an appeal regarding the seized assets related to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan in the direction of canceling the seizure order for the land plot of more than 4,000 m2 in the land plot in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi.

Before the appeal hearing, AIC Company also filed an appeal against the civil part of the first instance judgment, requesting the appellate court to reassess the value of the damages that the company must compensate. According to the first instance judgment, AIC Company must compensate 15 billion VND.

The first instance verdict stated that defendant Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan contacted Dong Nai leaders to ask for help, allowing AIC Company to participate and win the bid at Dong Nai Hospital even though she knew she did not have the financial capacity to participate.

Ms. Nhan then directed her employees to collude with the investor and other units to prepare bidding documents in a way that helped AIC Company win the bid, causing a loss of 152 billion VND.

While working in Dong Nai, defendant Nhan and his subordinates bribed former Secretary Tran Dinh Thanh 14.5 billion VND; Dinh Quoc Thai 14.5 billion VND and Phan Huy Anh Vu 14.8 billion VND.
