Among 18 provinces and cities nationwide with hundreds of millions of dong in rewards for students winning gold medals at international Olympics, Hai Duong ranks 5th with a reward of 300 million dong per student.
Nationwide, 18 localities reward students who win gold medals at international Olympics with 100 million VND or more, the highest being Quang Ninh - 700 million.
According to government regulations, students who win international Olympic prizes are awarded 55, 35 and 25 million VND, respectively, for gold, silver and bronze medals.
In addition, many localities have their own reward policies for local students when they achieve good results in domestic and international competitions.
Of these, 18 provinces and cities reward students who win gold medals at international Olympics with VND100 million or more. Most of them set specific levels, while some localities base their rewards on the basic salary coefficient. When this salary increased to VND2.34 million per month from July 1, the rewards in many localities also increased.
Specifically, Bac Giang awarded 121.7 million VND for international gold medals (equivalent to 52 times the basic salary), Quang Ngai 117 million, an increase of about 30 million VND compared to before. The bonuses of Thai Nguyen and Nghe An were 164 and more than 140 million VND, about 40 million higher than last year.
Not based on the salary coefficient but on an absolute level, Hai Duong province also increased the bonus for students who won international gold medals by 100 million VND, from 200 to 300 million VND, applied from December 2023.
The bonus levels of the remaining localities remain unchanged. Quang Ninh remains the highest with 700 million VND. Bac Ninh and Hai Phong each receive 500 million, and Vinh Phuc 400.
Slightly lower is Hung Yen with 90 million VND for the international gold medal, Lao Cai with 70 million.
In addition, localities also reward teachers who train excellent students who win prizes. The teachers' bonus is usually 30-50% of the students'.
Leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang once said that the high reward policy is one of the reasons that has helped improve the local educational achievements.
Hanoi - which has a low reward of 20 million VND for students winning international gold medals, is proposing to increase it to 250 million.
