According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 40,922 Toyota and Lexus vehicles have defective seat belts in the middle rear seats.

The defect occurs when the seat belt manufacturer uses the wrong tool in the "hot knife cutting" process, causing damage and rendering the seat belt inoperable or inoperable.

The seat belts fitted to the Toyota and Lexus vehicles listed above were manufactured by Joyson Safety Systems in Mexico. The safety department discovered the defect during a routine inspection and found hot cuts in the seat belts. The Japanese automaker conducted a follow-up inspection and found that the strength of the seat belts in the middle of the rear seats did not meet motor vehicle safety standards.

The seat belt defect affects 32,529 2025 Camrys and 3,242 2024-2025 Lexus RX 350s. The rest are 2024-2025 Lexus RX 350h, RX 500h and 2025 Lexus NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h.

The manufacturer will notify each affected vehicle owner in late March or early April. The recalled vehicles will be inspected and the rear center seat belt assembly will be replaced if necessary.
