Hundreds of police officers, including many forces, divided into many layers, from the gate to the inside of the court, maintained security and order for the trial of Ms. Vu Hoang Oanh, also known as Oanh Ha, and 34 accomplices.

On the morning of December 24, Ms. Vu Hoang Oanh, 67 years old, from Hai Phong, and 34 accomplices were brought to the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City early to be tried for the crimes of buying, selling, transporting, and illegally storing drugs.

Much thinner than when she was arrested, Ms. Oanh looked sullen as she was led into the courtroom. She was accused of leading a group of people who smuggled more than 626 kg of drugs, worth 1,400 billion VND, from the Golden Triangle to Vietnam while on the run.

This was an especially serious case, so hundreds of armed police were mobilized to maintain order and security for the trial. Quite a number of relatives of the defendants were also present early in the area in front of the courthouse gate, but most were not allowed inside.

Ms. Oanh had 7 previous convictions and was the older sister of Dung "Ha" (a gangster boss in Hai Phong who was shot dead by Nam Cam in Ho Chi Minh City). Oanh Ha was arrested in a drug case in 2002, but because she contributed a lot to helping the police solve the case, she received a light sentence and completed her prison term after only 7 years.

After being released from prison, the boss continued to develop the network on a larger scale and participated in many gambling networks. In 2011 and 2015, she received two more prison sentences for gambling-related crimes.

In May 2018, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04, Ministry of Public Security) dismantled a drug ring and arrested many underlings, but the female boss escaped.

The prosecution determined that, despite being internationally wanted, Ms. Oanh continued to recruit many gangsters to form a drug trafficking network from the Golden Triangle area to Vietnam.

From 2019 to 2022, she organized and directed a drug trafficking ring from Cambodia to Vietnam for consumption in Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hanoi and neighboring provinces.

Initially, Oanh directly hired Nguyen Van Nam, 34 years old, from Hai Phong, to transport a total of 34 cakes (nearly 13 kg) and then transported them through a small-scale route near Tho Mo border gate, An Giang, to Ho Chi Minh City to deliver to Oanh's customers.

Later, in Ho Chi Minh City, Oanh hired Nguyen Anh Bao Quoc to receive drugs from other links or directly receive old car gearboxes with drugs hidden inside to disassemble, take out the drugs, hide them and deliver them to Nam and other customers.

In the North, Oanh directed Nam to go to Ho Chi Minh City to get drugs from Quoc or from a woman in Cay Sung Alley, District 8, and receive old car gearboxes with drugs hidden inside, transporting them to Hai Phong to deliver to customers.

In total, the defendants successfully transported 129 boxes of drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam, each box containing at least 5 kg of drugs.

To keep the operation of the line secret, defendant Oanh often used fake names such as: "Colombia", "Mosscau" or "Mosscau Russia"; used social networks, phone SIM cards of the US and Cambodia to communicate and direct the delivery of drugs. The defendant also used an intermediary account named Hoang Cong Tu to make payments with a total amount of about 1,400 billion VND.

During the investigation, the defendants confessed that this ring had illegally bought, sold and consumed over 1.6 tons of drugs. However, the defendants all agreed with each other about not knowing the time of delivery and receipt, how much and what kind of drugs were in each shipment, so the Procuracy only had enough grounds to handle the evidence of 626 kg of various types of drugs.

Because Vu Hoang Oanh did not confess to his and his accomplices' crimes, the amount of illegal profits could not be determined.

Nguyen Van Nam was accused of helping Ms. Oanh buy and sell 384 kg of various drugs. He said that since the beginning of 2020, the boss had paid him through her account, from 300 million VND to 500 million VND per shipment, depending on the amount of drugs. When he was arrested, Nam could not remember exactly how much money he had received from Ms. Oanh. However, according to the statement, the total amount was about 15.5 billion VND.

Quoc was also one of the people who actively helped Oanh transport more than 174 kg of drugs. For each trip, Quoc was paid 30-50 million VND by the boss, but he did not remember how much he received in total.

The trial is scheduled to last until December 30.
