Nine Vietnamese universities entered the Times Higher Education world rankings in eight subject areas, an increase of three representatives compared to 2024.
The Times Higher Education (THE) has just announced the 2025 world university rankings by subject group. Vietnamese universities are ranked in 8/11 groups, including: business and economics, computer science, educational research, engineering, life sciences, medicine and health, physical sciences, and social sciences.
The three new representatives are Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Overall, they are mainly in the 301-1,000 group, not much different from last year.
Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University are both ranked 301-400 in the engineering, life sciences and physical sciences groups.
In the field of medicine and health, social sciences, Duy Tan University is in the 401 - 500 group, while Ton Duc Thang University is in this rank with the computer science major.
In the business and economics group, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is ranked 301-400. Hanoi National University is the only representative ranked in educational research, in the 401-500 group, similar to last year.
THE is one of the three largest ranking organizations in the world, along with QS and Shanghai Ranking. This organization said that there are 5 groups of evaluation criteria including Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook. Each group of criteria accounts for 4 - 30% of the weight, with the highest being Research Environment.
This is also the reason why Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University have high positions compared to other Vietnamese representatives in the rankings. According to the conclusion of the Ministry of Education and Training in 2022, the two universities have many policies to motivate scientific research, spending a large proportion of their revenue on this activity (10 - 20%). In addition to the research of lecturers, both also signed research cooperation agreements with domestic and foreign scientists. This contributes to increasing the number of international publications and citation index.
