The information was shared by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Deputy Director in charge of the Hanoi Department of Health, at the 10th Hanoi Endocrinology - Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome Conference, on November 16.

Mr. Hung said that in 2023, the cost of the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) for diabetes treatment in Hanoi will account for 5% of total expenditure, equivalent to VND1,000 billion.

"The data on health insurance is just the 'tip of the iceberg', many diabetic patients have to buy more medicine from outside," said Mr. Hung.

Also at the conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Trung Quan, President of the Hanoi Endocrinology - Diabetes Association, updated information that there are currently more than half a billion people in the world with diabetes.

“This is the fastest growing disease in the 21st century,” Dr. Quan shared. In Vietnam, it is estimated that there are about 6 million people suffering from this disease. Notably, 50% of them do not know they have the disease, have not been diagnosed, managed or treated. This is a big challenge for Vietnamese healthcare in general and Hanoi healthcare in particular."

More specifically, this 50% includes people at risk of diabetes such as overweight, obesity; family history of the disease; history of gestational diabetes; history of high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, gout, people giving birth to children over 3.5 kg...

According to Associate Professor Quan, in the latest treatment guidelines, heart and kidney complications are considered dangerous, with the highest risk of death. Diabetic patients are 5 times more likely to have heart failure than those without the disease. Half of them are at risk of death within 5 years. In addition to heart and kidney complications, blindness, foot problems, nerve damage, etc., a complication that both men and women with diabetes can suffer from is hypogonadism, which affects family happiness.

In particular, the phenomenon of diabetes becoming younger is very serious. Many children aged 13-15 have type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, diabetic patients are very confused because of the advertisements flooding the Internet and social networks such as "just one treatment course to cure the disease". This causes many patients to stop taking their medication and treatment regimen, thereby increasing the risk of complications and even death.

“Up to now, diabetes associations around the world have confirmed that there is no possibility of completely curing this disease,” Associate Professor Quan said. However, diabetes cannot be cured, but people can prevent, manage and avoid complications, and live completely healthy lives.
