On September 13, the South Korean military protested North Korea's launch of two objects believed to be ballistic missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula that morning, and called for a halt to the test launches.

Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the government has sent a formal protest to North Korea through the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to collect information and ensure safety for ships and aircraft passing through the area.

The Japanese government said both missiles launched by North Korea fell outside the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), causing no damage to ships or aircraft in the area.

According to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the launches from an area around Sunan, at around 11:43 and 11:53 a.m. on September 13. The North Korean missiles flew about 650km.

The launches came as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was visiting Russia.

Most recently, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles on August 30.
