On September 12, the South Korean military said North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.
According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), these short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Pyongyang area (North Korea) at 7:10 a.m. on September 12 local time. However, this agency has not yet specified how many missiles were launched and how far the North Korean missiles flew.
Meanwhile, Japan said an object believed to be a North Korean ballistic missile fell into the sea. A Japanese government source said the North Korean missile likely fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The launch took place as Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) began the process of electing a new leader to succeed Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
The last time North Korea launched a ballistic missile was on July 1.
