North Korea fired multiple projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on the morning of January 14, the South Korean military said, just days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

The launch was detected at around 9:30 a.m. from the Ganggye area in North Korea's Jagang Province, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

This is Pyongyang's second launch this year, after the country announced it had launched a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile on January 6.

At the ruling Workers' Party's year-end meeting, North Korea announced it would implement the "toughest" countermeasure strategy against the United States, accusing military cooperation between South Korea, the United States and Japan of expanding into an "invading military bloc".

"In preparation for additional launches, our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance, closely shared information on North Korean missiles with the US and Japan, and maintained a full readiness posture," the JCS statement said.
