South Korean authorities say a motorcyclist fell into a 20-meter-wide sinkhole that appeared in the middle of a street in the country's capital, Seoul.
Local authorities said the sinkhole appeared near an elementary school in Gangdong Ward, east of Seoul, on the evening of March 24. Authorities are currently conducting a rescue operation to rescue the motorcyclist.
A motorist passing along the road just before the sinkhole appeared was also injured and had to be taken to hospital.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se Hoon has called for safety measures to prevent further casualties. He said the sinkhole, which affects four of the six lanes of the road, is getting bigger.
According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, the sinkhole is 20 meters wide and 30 meters deep. Police and firefighters suspect that a broken water main pipe may have caused the sinkhole to appear.
