3 women in Hue sentenced for livestreaming debt collection

On May 23, the People's Court of Hue City held a trial for the "humiliation of others" case against a group of three women who went to collect debt but livestreamed on social media while cursing the debtor.

The three defendants in the case are Tran Thi NY (41 years old, residing in Phu Bai ward, Huong Thuy town), Vo Thi K.Tr. (36 years old, residing in Tay Loc ward, Hue city) and Mai Thi Q.Tr. (46 years old, residing in Vi Da ward, Hue city).

According to the indictment, previously Tran Thi NY and Nguyen D.T. (44 years old, residing in Thuan Hoa ward, Hue city) had a conflict with each other over borrowing money to contribute capital to do business.

On the afternoon of January 29, 2023, Y. invited Vo Thi K.Tr. and Mai Thi Q.Tr. to Mr. T.'s mother's house in Thuan Hoa ward to collect a debt of 1 billion VND from him.

Here, Y.'s group used mobile phones to livestream on Facebook, while using abusive and insulting words to insult the dignity and honor of Mr. T..

Ms. Y. also used the image of Mr. T.'s citizen identification card available on her phone to post online in a livestream clip to collect debt. The clip above is more than 5 minutes long and has many viewers and comments.

The above incident has affected Mr. T's normal life and work, so he has filed a request to initiate a criminal case.

At the trial, the jury determined that this was a simple case of complicity, the defendants had no prior discussion or preparation, and just committed the crime together on the spur of the moment.

In which, Y. was the initiator, the instigator and the executor so he must bear the main responsibility. The other two were accomplices, supporting Y. in the crime.

Based on the above circumstances, Hue City People's Court sentenced Tran Thi NY to 6 months in prison but suspended the sentence.

Defendants Vo Thi K.Tr. and Mai Thi Q.Tr. were also sentenced to 4 months in prison each, but given suspended sentences.
