Sentenced to 6 years in prison for "activities aimed at overthrowing the people's government"

According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of An Giang province, around September 2020, defendant Le Thi Kim Phi (born in 1959, residing in Binh Long 1 hamlet, My Binh ward, Long Xuyen city, An Giang province) used the Facebook account "Phi Kim" to make friends with a number of Facebook accounts who were members of the organization "Provisional National Government of Vietnam" led by Dao Minh Quan abroad and participated in the organization's associations and groups... Le Thi Kim Phi regularly followed, commented, liked, and shared articles, video clips, and images with content that propagated against the Party and the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, praising the Republic of Vietnam regime and Dao Minh Quan.

By the end of December 2020, Phi applied to join the "Provisional National Government of Vietnam" and participated in online meetings with the organization many times where members exchanged and discussed issues related to the organization's activities, guidance, training, and coaching on operating methods. Le Thi Kim Phi also registered to participate in the "Referendum" to elect Dao Minh Quan as President of the Third Republic of Vietnam.

According to the conclusion of the appraisal by the Department of Information and Communications of An Giang province, the video clips and documents seized from the Facebook account "Phi Kim" of Le Thi Kim Phi contained propaganda against the Party and the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and contained activities aimed at overthrowing the government. On July 15, 2021, the Investigation Security Agency of An Giang Provincial Police issued a decision to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused and issue an arrest warrant for Phi for temporary detention. Searching Phi's residence, the authorities seized many related evidences.

At the first instance trial, defendant Le Thi Kim Phi admitted her crime. After deliberation, the Trial Panel of the People's Court of An Giang province sentenced defendant Le Thi Kim Phi to 6 years in prison for "Activities aimed at overthrowing the people's government".
