On November 28, the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board (An Giang province) held a press conference to announce an international cooperation program on scientific research and archaeological excavation of the Go Danh Sang relic.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Gieng, Director of the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board and Mr. Lee Young-Cheol, Director of the Daehan Cultural Heritage Research Institute (Korea) chaired the meeting.
Go Danh Sang relic belongs to Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological relic site, Oc Eo town, Thoai Son district, An Giang province; approved by An Giang Provincial People's Committee, announced the inventory list of works and sites of Oc Eo cultural archaeological relics in the province.
Accordingly, the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board will coordinate with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University; Daehan Institute of Cultural Heritage Research and Joseon Institute of Cultural Heritage Research (Korea), to conduct archaeological excavations at the Go Danh Sang relic. According to Decision No. 3643/QD-BVHTTDL of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the excavation period is 60 days from November 29, 2023 to January 23, 2024. The excavation area is 300 m2; including 3 pits, each pit is 100 m2.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Gieng, Director of the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board, said: The archaeological excavation work aims to examine the scale of relic distribution and the characteristics and distribution of the Oc Eo cultural residents living in the Southeast of the Ba The mountain foot area. From there, the role and position of the relic system in this area in the common space of the Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological relic site will be assessed and the Prime Minister will be proposed to allow the expansion of the planning according to the requirements of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in building a world heritage dossier for the Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological relic site.
Mr. Lee Young-Cheol, Director of Daehan Cultural Heritage Research Institute, emphasized: Danh Sang Mound is closely related to religious issues, which is very suitable for the research field of Korea. The joint excavation of Danh Sang Mound will contribute to soon making Oc Eo - Ba The An Giang Archaeological Site a World Cultural Heritage.
According to the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board of An Giang Province: All funds for the archaeological excavation of the Go Danh Sang relic and scientific research were sponsored by Korean scientific organizations. The program is part of a joint research cooperation project between the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board and Korean scientific organizations to determine the role of ancient residents in the lower Mekong Delta and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula in the ancient maritime trade route by restoring the lives of ancient populations from archaeological excavations in An Giang and some archaeological sites of the same era in Korea.
The results from the archaeological excavation will be the basis for promoting cooperation between organizations in implementing international exhibition programs and publishing publications to promote the Oc Eo Cultural Heritage, An Giang to the world.
