According to the investigation, Tien was sad about family matters and was also unemployed, so he discussed with his wife, Nguyen Thi Kieu Oanh (32 years old), to buy pesticides and sleeping pills to commit suicide.

Tien and Oanh rented a room, drank and gave their two children, ages 6 and 9, pesticide to commit suicide but did not die. On June 13, Tien and his wife continued to take their two children to Nui Sam ward, Chau Doc city, An Giang province to rent a room and continued to carry out their suicide attempt.

Tien and Oanh went to many pharmacies and bought 10 packs of sleeping pills. On the evening of June 15, Tien and Oanh divided the sleeping pills among their two children first, then both husband and wife took them.

The next morning, the motel staff checked the room Tien and his wife rented and found something unusual, so they reported it to the police. After opening the door to check, the police discovered that Oanh and her two children had died. Tien was still breathing, so he was taken to the An Giang Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment and survived.

Through the crime scene investigation, the police seized a number of drugs Bromazepam, Rotundi... On June 22, the Investigation Police Agency of An Giang Province Police issued a decision to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused, and temporarily detain Nguyen Minh Tien for the crime of "murder".
