On January 11, Hanoi police are investigating a case of a woman who was scammed out of more than 1 billion VND when she registered her child for a basketball course online.

On January 5, Ms. D. (born in 1994; residing in Cau Giay District) registered her child for basketball lessons through the Facebook page “Vietnam Basketball Federation VBF”. Afterwards, Ms. D. was instructed to download the Telegram application to perform tasks and was robbed of 1.1 billion VND. Realizing that she had been scammed, Ms. D. went to the Trung Hoa Ward Police Station, Cau Giay District to report.

According to Hanoi City Police, recently, fake Facebook accounts have appeared, impersonating the "Vietnam Basketball Federation VBF" announcing basketball class enrollment to lure people to participate and then appropriate their property.

When parents register for the course, the scammers will ask them to download the Telegram app to be guided by “experts” to participate in a number of tasks to confirm sports equipment and reduce tuition fees.

After a number of low-value tasks, the scammer asks people to perform high-value tasks. At this time, using many excuses that the victim performed the wrong syntax, the subjects ask the victim to perform the task many times or transfer more money to withdraw all the transferred money.

When the amount reaches hundreds of millions, even billions of dong, the subjects will disconnect and delete the chat group on the Telegram application.

To avoid fraud, Hanoi City Police recommends that people be vigilant when registering for basketball classes and other sports advertised on social networks. If interested, families should go directly to the centers and training facilities to learn about the sport and register their children to participate.

When encountering cases with signs of fraud, people need to immediately contact the police to promptly resolve the matter according to regulations.
