A woman in Hanoi was scammed out of nearly VND1 billion after joining a group impersonating the organizers of a marathon for children aged 4-15 and their families.
On October 7, Hanoi City Police said that recently, Ms. T. (in Hanoi) accessed an advertisement on the Facebook page “KIDS RUN - Marathon” about a race for children aged 4-15 and their families.
Seeing this as a useful playground for her child, Ms. T. texted to register to participate. The "organizers" requested that parents participate in a survey to be officially approved to join the general group for communication and exchange.
When she joined the group, Ms. T. was asked by a person who called herself a "parent" to help sponsors in a running event to increase sales. After transferring 850 thousand VND and 3 million VND, she received the full amount she had sent back.
However, when the requested amount increased, Ms. T. did not receive it back and was asked by the "fake parents" in the group, saying that they could not withdraw the money either, but if they performed additional tasks, they would receive the full amount of the previous two times.
Suspecting fraud, Ms. T. asked the "parents" to provide ID photos. Seeing that these photos seemed trustworthy, she continued to transfer money 7 more times, with a total amount of nearly 1 billion VND. When she could not withdraw the money, she realized she had been scammed and went to the police to report the incident.
To avoid fraud, Hanoi City Police advise people to be extremely careful when participating in social networks. Absolutely do not make requests to transfer money to any individual or organization without clearly identifying the recipient.
If you discover any cases showing signs of fraud, you should immediately report them to the nearest police agency for timely handling.
