Woman loses nearly 4 billion VND after believing in 'single dad' online

On November 16, the Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department (Hanoi City Police) said that it had just received a report from a woman in Hanoi about losing 4 billion VND while making friends online.

Accordingly, Ms. T. received a message from a man who claimed to be a "single father" working at a company in Hanoi. After a period of chatting, the two developed feelings for each other. This man then announced that he was going on a business trip and sent Ms. T. a business trip decision, plane tickets, and videos of scenes at the airport and hotel, which made her completely trust him.

A few days later, this person sent Ms. T. a link and asked her to help him do it. Initially, the "single father" deposited 100 million VND and instructed Ms. T. to withdraw 115 million VND. After that, he asked her to create a new account to "wait for a chance to make a big profit". Ms. T. followed the instructions and made transactions according to the time frame specified by this man.

In just 6 days, Ms. T. made 14 transactions with a total amount of nearly 4 billion VND. When she tried to withdraw money, the system reported an error. At this time, she was asked to deposit more than 900 million VND before being able to withdraw money. Suspecting that she had been scammed, on November 14, Ms. T. went to the police station to report the incident.

Regarding the incident, Hanoi City Police recommended that people need to be vigilant against scams on the internet, especially high-tech tricks such as AI, DeepFake, DeepVoice... to build trust.
