Ho Chi Minh City is a member of the "Global Learning Cities Network"

Ho Chi Minh City becoming a member of UNESCO's "Global Network of Learning Cities" is an honor, the result of the process of building a lifelong learning environment for the city's residents.

On the evening of March 30, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City held a "Ceremony to honor Ho Chi Minh City as a member of the global network of learning cities recognized by UNESCO."

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, said that Ho Chi Minh City becoming an official member of the UNESCO Global Learning Cities Network is an honor, the result of the process of focusing on building a lifelong learning environment for the city's people; demonstrating the world's recognition of the policies, commitments and efforts of Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular in ensuring quality, equitable and comprehensive education, promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, contributing to enhancing the position of Vietnam's education in the international arena.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, this is an opportunity for all people and the City government to continue to propose development action programs so that Ho Chi Minh City becomes a place where all people, regardless of age or nationality, can continue to learn; create an open learning environment where each citizen can develop the skills and knowledge necessary to adapt and develop in the digital world.

“Ho Chi Minh City will make continuous efforts to ensure that all citizens have opportunities to learn and develop; commit to continue to cooperate closely with other members of the Global Learning Cities Network to share experiences, learn and build a better learning environment for everyone,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Le.

The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council hopes that with the cooperation and support from UNESCO and other members of the network, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to develop and grow strongly, becoming a leading educational center in the region and achieving prestige and high rankings in the world's assessments and recognition.

Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker, Chief Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Vietnam, said this registration is a memorable milestone in the educational development of Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker, Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant economic and cultural center of the country and the region; it has a lot of potential for ideas and creativity on all fronts, including in education.

UNESCO is very interested in Ho Chi Minh City's initiative to develop and approve a set of criteria for happy schools, based on UNESCO's global happy school framework, with the intention of applying it in primary and secondary schools in the city.

This model will be at the heart of educational reform, placing happiness as a key factor in improving the quality of learning.

On behalf of the city's leaders, Mr. Duong Anh Duc Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, said that the title "Global Learning City" recognized by UNESCO is not only an achievable goal but also a starting point for the next action programs.

Studying, working, contributing and enjoying are the inevitable and objective needs of each individual in the process of social development. Every citizen has the responsibility and right to study regularly, study for life, and take advantage of every learning opportunity to become a good citizen, a digital citizen, a global citizen.

The Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city, socio-political organizations, socio-professional organizations, social organizations, unions, business communities, organizations and individuals to step up propaganda and raise awareness for cadres, party members, civil servants, public employees, workers and all people about the practical benefits that the "Global Learning City" network can bring; thereby actively participating, joining hands, contributing and responding to activities to encourage learning and talent, building a learning society, a learning city, maintaining the title and perfecting the criteria of a Global Learning City.

On this occasion, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee launched the Action Program to build a "UNESCO Global Learning City for the period 2024 - 2030" in the city.
