Diet plays an important role in helping to strengthen the immune system against viruses that cause disease. So what foods are suitable for children with hand, foot and mouth disease when caring for them at home?
Signs of hand, foot and mouth disease in children
1. How to treat and care for children with signs of hand, foot and mouth disease?
According to medical experts, hand, foot and mouth disease often begins with symptoms: fever, poor appetite, discomfort and sore throat.
About 1-2 days after the fever, painful blisters appear in the mouth. They start as red blisters and often develop into ulcers, mainly on the tongue, gums and inside the cheeks.
A non-itchy rash appears over 1-2 days as flat or raised red lesions, some with blisters. The rash is usually concentrated on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, but may also appear on the buttocks and/or genitals...
When detecting signs of hand, foot and mouth disease in children, parents should take their children to a medical facility for examination and proper treatment. In cases where the disease is mild, children will be instructed to treat and care at home.
There is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive, such as reducing fever, giving children enough water, adequate nutrition, and cleaning areas of skin with blisters, especially mouth ulcers.
According to MSc. Do Thi Thuy Hau, Head Nurse of the Tropical Disease Center, National Children's Hospital, children with mild hand, foot and mouth disease, with only mouth ulcers, skin lesions with or without fever, can be treated and monitored at home.
Parents need to take care of their children and give them medicine according to the doctor's instructions. It is necessary to isolate and control the child's fever; clean the body, take care of the skin properly; closely monitor the child's illness, if there are any unusual signs, take the child immediately to a medical facility for appropriate and timely intervention.
About children's diet:
If the baby is still breastfeeding: continue to breastfeed (express milk and spoon feed when the baby has a sore mouth and cannot breastfeed).
For older children: feed them liquid, easy-to-digest foods such as soup and porridge. Children should be fed many small meals. Children should not be given spicy, hot, or hard foods.
2. Good foods for children with hand, foot and mouth disease
When children have hand, foot and mouth disease, they will feel very uncomfortable due to blisters in the mouth causing pain when chewing and swallowing. Therefore, children often do not want to eat, have loss of appetite, cry, or vomit... Nutrition experts advise parents to feed their children liquid but nutritious foods so that they can easily swallow, digest and ensure adequate nutrition for the body.
Soft, liquid foods such as soup and porridge contain a lot of water, which helps to replenish the water lost due to fever. Soup and porridge are also easy to digest and absorb. These are also children's favorite daily foods, so they will be easier for them to eat.
Below are some porridge and soup dishes that provide complete groups of nutrients such as: starch, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.tThese nutrients are essential to help children increase their resistance and recover quickly.
