South Korean police will implement the highest level of security alert across the country as the Constitutional Court is expected to issue a ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Lee Ho Young made the directive during a video conference with the country's top police officers, stressing that the police will maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergencies until public order and security are restored.
With the highest security alert level, the police force will be mobilized at 100%, accordingly, about 14,000 police officers from 210 units will be deployed in the capital Seoul alone to prepare for unexpected situations arising from large-scale gatherings after the court's ruling.
According to Mr. Lee, many people are concerned about the risk of radical protests after the Constitutional Court's ruling. Therefore, the police have been mobilized in full force to prevent serious conflicts from occurring. In addition, the police will completely block off the Constitutional Court headquarters and surrounding areas, and fully deploy to important national facilities.
In a related move, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said it had completed the blockade of the area within 150 meters of the courthouse with police vehicles. This blockaded area prohibits all gatherings and protests, and strictly controls traffic. A total of 200 vehicles were mobilized for this operation.
In preparation for an emergency, special police forces will be stationed at the Constitutional Court on the day of the verdict. Police estimate that about 100,000 supporters and opponents of President Yoon are expected to gather in downtown Seoul on April 4.
