Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol is the first sitting president of South Korea to appear in criminal court.
President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is facing impeachment proceedings, appeared for the first preliminary hearing in a criminal case on charges of leading a rebellion, becoming the first sitting South Korean president to appear in a criminal court, Yonhap news agency reported on February 20.
The hearing took place at the Seoul Central District Court in southern Seoul at 10 a.m. (8 a.m. the same day Hanoi time) to clarify the main controversies of the case and plan for further proceedings.
Although the preliminary hearing did not require the defendant to be present, Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol agreed to attend the event.
The court said it will hold another preliminary hearing for the trial.
Lawyers are likely to dismiss all charges against President Yoon Suk Yeol, as they did during his impeachment trial. The court has since begun considering a request to quash the arrest warrant and release him.
