South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol at the Constitutional Court in Seoul on February 20, 2025.

Accordingly, in a press release on April 1, the Constitutional Court said it would issue its verdict at 11 a.m. on April 4. In addition, the verdict will also be broadcast online.

Jung Chung Rai, a member of the opposition Democratic Party, was the first to share information about the date when the Constitutional Court announced that it would impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. The lawmaker said he had received a notice from the court. Jung is a member of the impeachment committee of the National Assembly.

In a related move, also on April 1, the Democratic Party increased pressure by continuing to call on Acting President Han Duck-soo to appoint another Constitutional Court judge proposed by the opposition, while warning of consequences if he is not appointed by the end of today.

"This is a final warning to Mr. Han to confirm Mr. Ma Eun-hyuk as a Constitutional Court judge today," Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae said at a press conference.

"If the appointment is not made by the end of the day, the Democratic Party will take necessary action in the National Assembly to prevent the collapse of the Constitution," Park added.

Park had previously said he would take major action if Han did not appoint Ma by April 1. This appeared to be a reference to efforts to call for a second impeachment of the acting president, as well as Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and other cabinet members.

Currently, the Constitutional Court has eight judges, and at least six judges need to vote in favor to formally impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol. Increasing the number of judges, especially those proposed by the opposition, seems to increase the possibility of the Constitutional Court issuing an unfavorable ruling against President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Earlier, South Korea's ruling People's Power Party (PPP) announced that it would accept the Constitutional Court's ruling in the impeachment case of President Yoon Suk Yeol, regardless of the outcome.

Kweon Seong-dong, head of the PPP parliamentary group, gave the party's official stance ahead of the court's ruling on whether President Yoon will be impeached for declaring martial law on December 3, 2024. At the time, Kweon Seong-dong also called on the Constitutional Court to quickly decide on the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who has been suspended from office for more than 80 days.

If Yoon Suk-yeol is impeached, South Korea will have to hold a presidential election within 60 days of the ruling. Otherwise, Yoon will remain in office until the end of May 2027.
