South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faces charges of colluding with then-Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and others to foment riots by declaring martial law.
On January 23, the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) filed a petition with the prosecution to indict President Yoon Suk Yeol for his failed attempt to declare martial law.
The CIO said it had called for the president to be charged with insurrection and abuse of power.
Information from the CIO said that President Yoon faces charges of colluding with then-Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and others to cause riots by declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.
Mr Yoon also faces charges of abuse of power for sending troops to the National Assembly to prevent South Korean lawmakers from voting to reject the decree.
President Yoon is currently under house arrest at Uiwang Detention Center, south of Seoul.
A Constitutional Court hearing is also underway to determine whether to uphold or reject his impeachment proposed by the South Korean National Assembly.
If upheld, President Yoon would be removed from office and South Korea would have to hold a presidential election within 60 days. If rejected, Yoon would be reinstated as president.
The Constitutional Court has up to 180 days to issue a ruling.
