120 Hai Duong students compete in the national final round of the TIMO International Mathematical Olympiad

120 students from primary and secondary schools in Hai Duong province have passed the qualifying round to participate in the national final round of the TIMO International Mathematics Olympiad in the 2024-2025 school year.

On the afternoon of December 15, along with examination councils across the country, 120 students from primary and secondary schools in Hai Duong participated in the national final round of the TIMO International Mathematics Olympiad for the 2024-2025 school year at Marie Curie II Secondary and High School (Hai Duong City).

This is the first time the national final round of the TIMO International Mathematical Olympiad has been held in person in Hai Duong, hosted by Marie Curie II Secondary and High School. In previous years, the exam was held online.

The contest attracted students from 6 secondary schools and 20 primary schools in the province, such as the Marie Curie inter-level school system, Le Quy Don Secondary School (Hai Duong City), Tu Lac Primary School (Kinh Mon), Cam Dien Primary School (Cam Giang), Minh Tan Primary School (Nam Sach). The youngest contestant was Vu Duy Quang, Amanaki Primary School (Hai Duong City), born in 2018.

Candidates take the test directly on paper. During 90 minutes, these candidates must fill in the answers to 25 questions. The test is in English with Vietnamese subtitles. The questions are in areas such as logical thinking, arithmetic/algebra, number theory, geometry, combinatorics; the number of questions is divided equally according to each area.

Outstanding candidates will be selected to participate in the international final round scheduled to be held in April 2025. The international final round will consist of 30 fill-in-the-blank questions, with a time limit of 120 minutes, and the questions will be in English. Candidates who win gold medals in the international final round will be eligible to participate in the final round of the WIMO World Mathematics Olympiad.

Previously, over 120 of these students had successfully passed the national qualifying round of the TIMO International Mathematical Olympiad. The qualifying round was held online. Candidates answered 25 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with bilingual questions in English and Vietnamese.

The 2024-2025 school year is the 11th year that the TIMO International Mathematical Olympiad has been held worldwide and the 6th time it has been held in Vietnam. Many Hai Duong students have won high prizes in the national and international finals of the TIMO International Mathematical Olympiad, including students from the Marie Curie Hai Duong inter-school system.

The Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) is organized by the Olympiad Champion Education Centre from Hong Kong, the Thai Mathematical Association in cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
