Below are 10 outstanding events of Vietnam in 2023 voted by VNA:
1. Mid-term conference of the 13th Party Central Committee:
The Central Executive Committee assessed that in the first half of the 2021-2026 term, our country has steadily overcome many difficulties and challenges, achieving important and quite comprehensive results in many fields; directed to focus on implementing 5 key tasks in the second half of the term, striving to successfully implement the resolution of the 13th National Party Congress.
The Central Committee has reviewed the leadership and direction of the Politburo and Secretariat and implemented the mid-term vote of confidence according to regulations.
2. GDP growth reaches over 5%:
In the context of facing many difficulties and challenges, Vietnam's economy achieved a GDP growth rate of over 5% with many positive signals: National brand value reached 431 billion USD, ranked 32/100 strong national brands in the world; rice exports exceeded 8 million tons, reaching a turnover of over 4.4 billion USD - the highest since 2009; FDI capital reached the highest level since 2020, of which registered capital reached 28.85 billion USD and realized capital reached 20.25 billion USD. In particular, trade surplus for the 8th consecutive year reached 26 billion USD, nearly 3 times higher than in 2022.
3. General Secretary, President of China, President of the United States visit Vietnam:
The two state visits to Hanoi by Chinese General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden have deepened Vietnam's relations with China and marked the upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership with the US. To date, Vietnam has established comprehensive strategic partnerships with six countries, including China, Russia, Japan, India, South Korea, and the US.
Vietnam actively participates in contributing initiatives at regional and international organizations; demonstrates its role and responsibility in solving global issues; and sends forces to rescue and overcome the consequences of the earthquake in Türkiye.
4. Issue new regulations on power control, prevention and fight against corruption and negativity:
Regulations 114-QD/TW, 131-QD/TW, 132-QD/TW of the Politburo demonstrate the determination of the Party and State to continue to promote the fight against corruption and negativity in personnel work; inspection, audit; investigation, prosecution, trial, and execution of sentences.
Many corruption and negative cases, especially serious and complicated, were prosecuted and tried. Notably, in the case at Van Thinh Phat Group, SCB Bank and other units, 23 inspectors and auditors were prosecuted; the amount of bribes received by an individual was found to be up to 5.2 million USD - the largest ever.
5. Set a record of putting 475 km of highway into use in one year:
The completion of 14 key transport projects, including the North-South Expressway Phase 1 component projects, has increased the total length of expressways nationwide to 1,892 km. This result contributes to realizing one of the three breakthroughs of the Socio-Economic Development Strategy for the 2021-2030 period.
The groundbreaking ceremony of 12 component projects of the North-South Expressway phase 2 on the first day of the year opened the way for the groundbreaking of a series of other key transport projects.
6. Great doctors and many places honored by UNESCO:
Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba archipelago was recognized as a World Natural Heritage; Hoi An and Da Lat cities were recognized as "Creative Cities" in the fields of handicrafts - folk arts and music; the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac was honored by UNESCO and celebrated on the occasion of his 300th birthday. In addition, Vietnam was honored as the "World's Leading Heritage Destination" for the fourth time at the World Travel Awards. The tourism industry is expected to welcome more than 12.5 million international visitors, exceeding the plan by about 5 million visitors.
7. Timely control of terrorist attack in Dak Lak:
The terrorist attack against the people's government with particularly serious consequences that occurred in Ea Tieu and Ea Ktur communes, Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province in the early morning of June 11 was controlled within 24 hours, bringing peace to the people. The authorities prosecuted and temporarily detained 91 subjects, and issued special wanted notices for 6 subjects. Public opinion strongly condemned the recklessness, recklessness, and barbarity of the terrorists.
8. “Mini apartment” fire disaster in Hanoi:
The fire at a “mini apartment building” that broke out on the night of September 12 on Khuong Ha Street, Hanoi, killed 56 people and injured 37 others. This disaster has sounded the alarm about the laxity in construction management in urban areas.

9. Vietnamese sports ranked first in the SEA Games held abroad for the first time:
At the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) held in Cambodia, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation won 136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals and 114 Bronze Medals, excellently achieving the No. 1 position overall. This is the first time Vietnam has topped the medal tally at a SEA Games held abroad, after 2 times winning the overall title at home in 2003 and 2022.
10. Realize the regulation "If you drink alcohol, beer - do not drive":
In the first 9 months of the year, the number of traffic accidents caused by drivers using alcohol decreased by 25.8% (down to 222), the number of deaths decreased by 50% (down to 99) and the number of injuries decreased by 22.6% (down to 168) compared to the same period last year. By the end of November, the traffic police force had penalized 670,623 cases of alcohol concentration violations while driving, an increase of 148% compared to the same period in 2022. Strict handling of violations has contributed to raising people's awareness of ensuring traffic safety, forming a culture of "If you drink alcohol, beer - do not drive", which is supported by public opinion.
