Yen Bai province plans to spend more than 48 billion VND to exempt tuition fees for all preschool children and public primary school students in the 2024-2025 school year.
This content was approved by the Yen Bai Provincial People's Council on September 30. The support level of 48 billion VND is equivalent to 100% of the tuition fees that students at all levels must pay.
Mr. Dao Anh Tuan, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Education and Training of Yen Bai province, said that since Decree 81/2021 of the Government on tuition fees took effect, this is the first time the province has exempted tuition fees for all students.
"The locality sympathizes with the people in the area who have been affected by storms and floods recently," said Mr. Tuan.
This school year, Yen Bai has more than 450 public schools with 235,600 students.
Storm No. 3 (Yagi) made landfall in Vietnam in early September, causing heavy damage to many provinces and cities. Of which, Yen Bai suffered an estimated loss of VND4,765 billion, with 54 people dead and missing.
Before Yen Bai, 6 localities supported 100% of tuition fees for all public school students, including Quang Nam, Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, Hai Phong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau. In addition, Long An reduced tuition fees by 50% for preschool children under 5 years old, and exempted secondary school tuition fees at public schools.
Currently, provinces and cities collect tuition fees at the rate of 8,000 - 340,000 VND/student/month, depending on the grade and location. Preschool children aged 5 and primary school students are exempted according to the general policy of the state.
