According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training on the morning of September 6, the Vietnamese national team participating in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2024 has 4 students who all won medals including: 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal.
All four medalists this year are students from the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The two gold medalists were Pham Cong Minh, grade 12, and Hoang Xuan Bach, grade 11. The silver medal went to Nguyen Huu Tuan, grade 10, and the bronze medal went to Pham Ngoc Trung, grade 12.
The 36th IOI exam was held in person from September 1 to 6, 2024 in Alexandria City (Egypt) with the direct participation of 353 candidates from 91 countries and territories (in addition to Russia, Belarus, Australia competing under the Olympic flag); 9 candidates competing online from Israel, Iran and Germany.
With 100% of the contestants winning medals, the Vietnam National IOI Team is in the group of 4 countries and territories with the highest results according to the medal tally, after the countries: United States, Japan and Poland (according to the results announced on the website of the IOI 2024 Organizing Committee, not ranking the Russian and Israeli IOI teams).
According to the regulations of the IOI Council 2024, the International Olympiad in Informatics has two official competition days. On each competition day, candidates will take a 5-hour computer programming test and solve 3 problems with rich content. The results will be automatically graded online by the system and the live scoreboard will be announced throughout the two competition days (online).
This year's exam is highly difficult, requiring candidates to be able to apply knowledge flexibly and be creative. With the strong development of the digital technology industry, countries are increasingly investing heavily in their teams and the competition between countries is getting higher in this exam.
Previously, in 2023, the Vietnam IOI Team was in the group of 9 countries with the highest results in the medal tally with 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.
