According to Ms. Tran Thi Trang, Director of the Department of Health Insurance (Ministry of Health), there is no absolutely exact figure for how long after drinking alcohol can one drive, or how long after drinking alcohol does the alcohol concentration in the body disappear.

The process of eliminating alcohol concentration depends on the amount of alcohol or beer that the person drinks and the biological characteristics and physical condition of each individual. From there, there is a certain index of how long it takes for the alcohol concentration in the blood to disappear.

One unit of alcohol is equivalent to 2/3 of a 330 ml bottle or can of beer (5% alcohol content), a 100 ml glass of wine (13.5% alcohol content), a 330 ml glass of draft beer or a 30 ml shot of spirits (40% alcohol content).

For people with a normal metabolism, after 1 hour, the liver will absorb and metabolize 1 unit of alcohol. However, to completely eliminate 1 unit of alcohol, the body will need another 1-2 hours.

Therefore, a healthy person with no illness will need 2-3 hours to remove the alcohol concentration from the body after drinking 1 unit.

For people with impaired liver function or slower metabolism, it takes longer to metabolize all the alcohol in the blood.

According to Ms. Trang, it is best not to drink alcohol. If you must drink, you should limit it to a low-risk level. Healthy men should not drink more than 2 units of alcohol, healthy women should not drink more than 1 unit of alcohol per day and drink less than 5 days/week. With such a level of drinking, it takes at least 4 hours to be able to drive.

If you drink a lot, drink in a hurry, even a case of beer or a bottle of wine, it is impossible to determine the exact alcohol concentration without a blood test. At that time, the amount of alcohol that the liver cannot tolerate and metabolize will become toxic and enter the blood and body.

The Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) recommends that there is no standard for how much alcohol consumption is harmful. The reason is that the risks and consequences of alcohol use are different, depending on the age, gender and other biological characteristics of each person, as well as different circumstances and ways of drinking alcohol.

Scientific evidence shows that drinking even small amounts of alcohol can cause certain health risks and consequences.

According to research published in the European Community Report on Alcohol Use 2012, the risk of death from disease and injury increases significantly if a person drinks more than two units of alcohol a day, and the risk of death increases in correlation with the level of drinking.

The UK health agency recommends that to prevent harm caused by alcohol, men should not drink more than 14 units in a week.
