Changes in recruiting based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology offer opportunities to improve the recruiting process for both companies and candidates.

Recruiters spend a lot of time searching for ideal candidates. Screening through resumes to identify the right person for a job position is a time-consuming and tedious process.

In addition, writing job descriptions that are both interesting to candidates and compliant with regulations and other requirements requires time and skill. In addition, job seekers often complain about the recruitment process taking too long.

Given these issues, leveraging AI to find the best candidates will certainly improve the experience for all parties involved in the recruitment process. But with any cutting-edge technology comes potential risks.

Experts warn that while applying AI to the recruitment process can solve certain problems, we should not expect AI to completely “revolutionize” the way companies recruit new employees.

According to the 2023 recruiting report by Criteria, a software and human resources company, only 12% of human resources professionals currently use AI in their recruiting and talent management processes.

Criteria's report says AI is being used in the recruiting process to write job descriptions, search for candidates, conduct assessments, track new candidates, communicate with candidates, and train new employees.

Tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Bard, recruitment chatbot software, and tailored solutions will help support this process.

While organizations await the expansion of regulatory requirements, the Center for Industry Self-Regulation (CISR), a nonprofit organization within the BBB National Programs, has established a set of rules and protocols to ensure AI technology operates reliably in the recruiting process.

BBB National Program is an independent, nonprofit organization that oversees multiple national industry self-regulatory programs, providing third-party dispute resolution and liability services to companies, outside and inside counsel, consumers, and others in a variety of industries.

“When AI tools are properly designed, deployed, and monitored, the technology can reduce widespread discrimination and unfairness,” said Eric Reicin, president and CEO of BBB National Programs.

When applied to companies like Amazon, Unilever, Koch Industries, and Microsoft, these principles have addressed issues of transparency, equity, non-discrimination, and more when applying AI in recruiting.

While the rise of AI-powered recruiting is a huge opportunity to improve the experience for both employers and job seekers, it is crucial that ethical and legal standards are maintained throughout the process.
