The leading US tech company has faced a series of complaints that its ChatGPT provides false information, which could damage the reputation of many people.

Vienna-based privacy advocacy group Noyb said ChatGPT “regularly provides false information about users without providing a way to correct it,” as well as “slanderous accusations of corruption, child abuse, or even murder.”

Citing a specific case, Noyb said that ChatGPT created a “horror story” about a Norwegian man, Arve Hjalmar Holmen. The chatbot portrayed him as a child murderer. Notably, the fake story included real elements from Holmen’s personal life.

The Noyb team supported Mr. Holmen in filing a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority. Noyb lawyer Joakim Soederberg said EU data protection regulations require that personal data be accurate and that users have the right to request that incorrect information be corrected. Additionally, showing ChatGPT users a small text warning that the chatbot may make obvious mistakes is clearly not enough.

Although OpenAI has updated ChatGPT to no longer identify Holmen as the murderer, the false information may still exist in the system. The Noyb group previously filed a complaint against ChatGPT in Austria in 2024, claiming that OpenAI’s AI tool generated incorrect answers that could not be corrected.
