HBO and Cinemax channels have not appeared on digital television platforms in Vietnam since early March.
On March 1, users of pay TV platforms such as FPT Play, TV360, and MyTV could no longer access HBO and Cinemax. On some services, the two channels were removed from the broadcast list, while others were still displayed but users could not watch.
"From 0:00 on March 1, HBO channel will stop broadcasting in the HBO Go package, applicable to the entire Asia-Pacific region," the notice appeared when users accessed the HBO channel on the TV360 platform.
In fact, many months ago, television platforms and HBO's authorized agent in Vietnam, MSky, announced the cessation of broadcasting of these channels, with the viewing deadline being the end of February.
HBO and Cinemax are two famous movie channels that have appeared in Vietnam for many years, then were included in the HBO Go package when this service was deployed in Vietnam. The package is provided on domestic digital TV platforms such as FPT Play, VieOn, TV360, MyTV, ClipTV, K+. In addition to television, HBO Go provides a library of available movies, including many famous series such asGame of Thrones, House of the Dragon, True Detective...
According to experts in the digital television field, the suspension of the two channels may not affect the user experience much because the current trend of watching movies is video on demand. "In fact, the content broadcast on the above TV channels is all available on the movie library, allowing users to proactively choose the movies they want instead of depending on the channel," this person said. In addition, some predict that the suspension of the TV channel may be a step to prepare for the provision of HBO's new service, Max, to compete with Netflix.
Some platforms said that after stopping broadcasting two TV channels, they will add more movies on HBO Go to compensate.
Since early 2025, many TV channels have stopped broadcasting or withdrawn from Vietnam, such as Animax or VTC channels after this TV station ceased operations. VTV channels were also briefly withdrawn from platforms in January due to not reaching an agreement with Vietnam Television, but were later brought back.
