Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda announced on January 12 that the company has launched a project to develop a new internal combustion engine.
Speaking at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyoda stressed that Toyota will continue to produce these engines because they are a practical means of achieving carbon neutrality, or zero carbon dioxide emissions.
The show kicked off on January 12 at Makuhari Messe, a large convention center in Chiba City, near Tokyo, with both Japanese and foreign manufacturers showcasing sports cars and modified vehicles.
Mr. Toyoda said that the engine production may seem like Toyota is going against the trend of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but that is not true because the engine is necessary for the future. Although he did not disclose details of the new project, the carmaker is accelerating the development of new engines, including hydrogen fuel engines that do not emit CO2.
At its booth, Toyota showed off the revamped GR Yaris sports car and a special edition of the Lexus RZ electric car. Other Toyota items on display included the AE86 sports car and re-engineered parts for the Supra, part of the GR Heritage Parts Project.
Other automakers at the 42nd Tokyo Auto Salon, which runs through Jan. 14, include Honda Motor and Nissan Motor, as well as foreign automakers such as China's BYD Auto and South Korea's Hyundai Motor.
Around 900 vehicles will be on display, making it the largest event in history. Along with the cars, parts for “tuned” vehicles and eco-friendly technology, including electric vehicles, will also be on display.
