On September 5, right after weightlifter Le Van Cong competed excellently and won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics (September 4), the Head of the Vietnam Sports Delegation for the Disabled awarded this athlete.
The prize money for the bronze medal won by weightlifter Le Van Cong at the 2024 Paris Paralympics will be 235 million VND, including 85 million VND (according to Decree 152/2020/ND-CP of the Government), 100 million VND from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and 50 million VND from sponsors.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Nguyen Hong Minh, Head of the Vietnamese Disabled Sports Delegation at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, expressed his joy and acknowledged that this achievement was the result of great efforts by athlete Le Van Cong as he practiced and treated his shoulder injury at the same time.
Congratulating Le Van Cong on his achievements, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh hopes that the athletes will continue to actively practice, improve their health and fitness, and prepare for upcoming major tournaments, especially the next Paralympics, which will have better results than this Paralympics.
Earlier on the evening of September 4, weightlifter Le Van Cong competed in the men's 49 kg weight class with strong opponents from Jordan, Iraq, Türkiye, India, and China, of which the most highly rated was athlete Omar Qarada of Jordan.
With a successful lift of 171kg, Le Van Cong won a bronze medal in the men's 49kg category. This is Le Van Cong's third Paralympic medal in three consecutive Paralympics.
Le Van Cong achieved 183.5kg in the men's 49kg weight class, breaking the world record and winning a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Along with that, the athlete born in 1984 won a silver medal in this weight class at the Tokyo Paralympics 3 years ago.
At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, due to the burden of age and persistent shoulder injuries, Le Van Cong only successfully lifted 171kg.
However, this is a commendable achievement and difficult for any athlete to surpass, as he owns a full set of Olympic medals through 3 consecutive games.
The bronze medal at this Paralympic Games also shows Le Van Cong’s tireless efforts. He has become an example of will, determination and the spirit of never giving up, overcoming all difficulties to rise up, affirming the value of those who are “disabled but not useless.”
With the bronze medal of weightlifter Le Van Cong, the Vietnam Sports Delegation for the Disabled has basically fulfilled its promise before departure to strive for a medal at the Games.
