On the afternoon of September 4, athlete Le Van Cong won a bronze medal in the 49kg weightlifting category at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, bringing pride to the Vietnamese Disabled Sports Delegation in particular and the country's fans in general.
Athlete Le Van Cong won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics when he lifted 171 kg for the first time. He was unsuccessful in the next two attempts to lift the weight when trying to achieve a higher result. Meanwhile, athlete Omar Sami Hamadeh Qarada of Jordan won a gold medal with a result of 181 kg. Athlete Abdulla Kayapinar of Türkiye won a silver medal with a weight of 180 kg.
Although the above result was not as expected by Le Van Cong to complete his hat-trick of medals at the Paralympic arena, this is the first medal that this athlete has brought home for the Vietnam Paralympic Sports Delegation at the 2024 Paralympics, and is also a medal marking the athlete's efforts to overcome his recurring injury.
Before the 2024 Paralympics, Le Van Cong held the world record in the 49kg category with a lift of 183.5kg. This is a record he set at the world championship held in Mexico in 2017. At the same time, this athlete born in 1984 also holds the Paralympic record with a professional lift of 183kg that helped him win a gold medal in Rio, Brazil in 2016.
Le Van Cong is a typical example of the effort to rise up, overcome adversity with an unfortunate fate to reach the peak of sports competition. The athlete from Quang Tri both trained and worked to make a living with many different jobs and his career was interrupted many times due to accidents in daily life but still came back strong.
