Why don't sedans have rear wipers?

While most cars have front and rear wipers, sedans do not have rear wipers, why?

Sedan models have a longer, larger rear trunk design that can protect against dirt when the car is in operation, so equipping a windshield wiper is unnecessary.

According to research by experts as well as standards set by car manufacturers, common car lines such as SUVs, CUVs, hatchbacks with short rear end designs will have rear wipers.

The reason is that during vehicle operation, in heavy rain conditions, mud and dirt can easily splash onto the rear window, at this time the wiper will clean the dirt on the rear window of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, unlike the bobtail models, the sedan models have a longer and larger rear trunk design, so they can better protect against dirt when the car is operating in bad weather. Therefore, equipping wipers on sedan models is unnecessary.

Research by car manufacturers also shows that, during the movement, due to the design characteristics of the vehicle related to the height, body design and rear window size, the air turbulence behind each car model will also be different. This turbulence will directly affect the amount of dust and dirt that splashes onto the glass and sticks to the vehicle, especially when the vehicle is operating at high speed.

SUV models have the rear window at the back of the car, with a straight rear design, so it is easy to get dirty while the car is moving. Therefore, SUV models are designed with wipers to help clean the rear window.

As for sedans, due to the large rear window of these models, if the wiper is made for the rear window, this wiper will be as large as the front windshield wiper. This will make the rear of the car lose its aesthetic appeal, while the amount of mud splashed onto the rear window of this car is also limited by the very long rear end. Therefore, the manufacturer has cut this detail.

Another reason is that hatchbacks or SUVs have the rear window installed in conjunction with the trunk door, so installing a rear wiper is quite easy and does not affect the aesthetics or area of the glass. On the contrary, installing a rear wiper on a sedan will be more complicated and costly because the trunk of a sedan is designed separately from the car frame.
