The D-segment sedan segment priced at VND1 billion in January 2024 continued to see a sharp decline in sales for most models, except for the Honda Accord. However, the Accord, despite its positive growth rate, was still the least popular.
According to the latest data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), total sales of the D-segment sedan segment in January 2024 reached a modest 195 vehicles, down 57% compared to December last year (455 vehicles). At the same time, this figure accounted for only 7.2% of the total number of sedans sold in January.
Also in January 2024, the ranking of car models in the D-segment sedan segment priced at 1 billion changed after 4 months when Mazda6 surpassed its rival KIA K5 to rise to 2nd place. Meanwhile, Honda Accord recorded a slight increase.
Below are the sales of D-class sedan models priced above and below 1 billion VND in January 2024:
1. Toyota Camry: 103 cars
After a breakthrough in the last month of 2023, Toyota Camry sales in January 2024 dropped sharply to only 103 vehicles, down 58% compared to the previous month (245 vehicles) and down 55% compared to the same period last year (230 vehicles).
Although the first month results of 2024 were not really good for Toyota Camry, compared to other competitors, this result is still the best, helping Camry lead sales in the D-segment sedan segment, far surpassing the remaining competitors.
The 9th generation Toyota Camry was launched in the Vietnamese market in April 2019, then upgraded and added more versions in December 2021. The car has 4 versions including 2.0G, 2.0Q, 2.5Q and 2.5HV with prices ranging from 1.105 - 1.495 billion VND.
2. Mazda6: 50 cars
In January 2024, Mazda6 sold 50 cars, down 43% compared to December 2023 (88 cars) and down 50% compared to the same period last year (100 cars). However, the result was still enough to help Mazda6 rise to 2nd place in the rankings after 4 consecutive months, allowing its Korean rival KIA K5 to surpass it.
This is also the position that Mazda6 has won in this segment based on cumulative sales of the whole last year. Mazda6 currently has 3 versions including 2.0 Premium, 2.0 Premium GTCCC and 2.5 Premium GTCCC with prices ranging from 779-914 million VND.
3. KIA K5: 34 cars
Compared to the last month of 2023 (115 cars), KIA K5 sales in January 2024 witnessed a sharp decline, reaching only 34 cars, down 70%. However, compared to the same period last year (57 cars), the decrease of this model was lower at 40%.
This sharp decline has prevented KIA K5 from extending its achievements on the rankings, sadly watching its rival Mazda6 surpass it and having to accept 3rd place.
The new generation KIA K5 was launched in Vietnam in October 2021 as a domestically assembled car with 3 versions including Luxury, Premium and GT-Line, each version has 2 engine options 2.0L and 2.5L. The selling price of K5 currently ranges from 859-999 million VND.
4. Honda Accord: 8 cars
Honda Accord had a positive opening month of 2024 when it sold 8 cars, an increase of 1 car compared to the last month of last year (7 cars).
However, the sub-double-digit increase still puts the Honda Accord in the top slowest-selling cars in January 2024. In fact, cumulative sales of the Honda Accord in the entire year of 2023 in the Vietnamese market only reached 58 cars, a very modest number.
The 10th generation Honda Accord was introduced in Vietnam in October 2019 with 1 version and was imported completely from Thailand with a high selling price of 1.319 billion VND. This is a barrier that makes it difficult for this D-size sedan of Honda to compete with its rivals.
It is known that the latest generation of Honda Accord has been launched in Thailand in the hybrid version. However, with the current poor sales, it is unclear whether the Japanese car company will decide to bring it back to introduce to Vietnamese customers or not.
