A total of 270 people have participated in the search and rescue operation over the past two days.

Mr. Ida Bagus Nyoman Ngurah Asrama, an official of the Gorontalo provincial search and rescue agency, confirmed that as of the afternoon of the same day, there were 66 survivors and 23 dead. Currently, the authorities are still searching for 35 missing people.

Vehicles are still unable to reach the disaster area due to several collapsed bridges, forcing rescuers to travel on foot, Mr. Ida added.

Earlier, other officials said some of the victims were miners, many others were vendors at nearby stalls.

The landslide occurred in a remote village in Bone Bolango district of Gorontalo province late on July 6 after days of heavy rain.

Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season from November to April. However, July is usually the dry season and unusually heavy rains like the one in question are rare.
