There were about 40 miners inside the shack when flash floods hit a gold mine in Gorontalo (Indonesia), some miners escaped, but the fate of others is still unknown.
Local authorities confirmed on July 7 that at least seven people were killed and three others injured after landslides and flash floods hit a gold mine and surrounding areas in Indonesia's Gorontalo province.
According to Mr. Achril Babyonggo - head of the operation department of the Bone Bolango district disaster management and mitigation agency, the disaster occurred at midnight at the local gold mine and seven bodies have been found.
“The landslide and flash floods hit the mountain camp where the gold mine is located. There were about 40 miners inside the camp. Some miners managed to escape, but the fate of the others is still unknown,” said Babyonggo.
In addition to the main camp, two smaller camps on the mountainside housing six people were also swept away by the flash floods, with three victims still missing. The mine is located in a remote location in the forest, far from villages, making communication and access difficult.
Mr. Babyonggo said heavy rain was the cause of the disaster.
