Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the disaster area on May 2 to inspect the situation, as the Rio Grande do Sul state government declared a state of emergency. Rescue teams are currently searching for dozens of missing people in the rubble of collapsed houses, bridges and roads.

Governor Eduardo Leite said Rio Grande do Sul is facing the worst disaster in the state's history. The disaster has affected nearly 150 municipalities in the state, forcing nearly 10,000 people to evacuate. Entire communities in Rio Grande do Sul have been cut off after persistent rains destroyed bridges and roads, leaving towns without even phone or internet service. Hundreds of thousands of people are without clean water, while classes across the state have been suspended. State Vice Governor Gabriel Souza estimated the damage from the disaster at $20 million.

During a meeting with Governor Leite and other officials to quickly deploy rescue and relief work, President Lula da Silva pledged to mobilize all resources to minimize the damage caused by the severe weather in the state. The central government has mobilized 12 planes, 45 vehicles, 12 boats and 626 soldiers to help clear roads, distribute food, water, mattresses and set up relief tents.

As heavy rains continue, the state's main river, the Guaiba, which has already overflowed in some areas, is expected to rise to a record 4 metres (13 feet) on May 3. State authorities have urged people to stay away from areas along state highways due to the risk of landslides, and those living near the river or on hillsides should evacuate.

Last September, at least 31 people were killed by a tornado that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul. South America’s largest country has recently been hit by a series of extreme weather events, which experts say are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The flooding comes amid a cold front sweeping across the south and southeast of the country following an extreme heat wave.
