Indonesian authorities said on March 9 that at least 10 people were killed and 10 others were missing due to flash floods and landslides in Pesisir Selatan district, West Sumatra province.
The head of the Pesisir Selatan district disaster mitigation agency, Doni Yusrizal, said heavy rains caused floods and landslides in the area, burying 14 houses, inundating more than 20,000 houses and collapsing eight bridges. 46,000 people were evacuated to temporary shelters. Heavy rains are still affecting the search for missing people and access to isolated areas.
In Padang Pariaman district, also in West Sumatra, heavy rains on March 7-8 caused rivers to overflow, causing floods and landslides, killing at least three people.
Last December, flash floods on Sumatra island killed at least two people, swept away dozens of homes and destroyed a hotel near Lake Toba.
