On March 28, the People's Court of Hai Duong province sentenced Nguyen Van Du (born in 1970, residing in Hai Tan ward, Hai Duong city) to life in prison for murder and robbery.
According to the indictment, Du is an alcoholic and suffers from alcohol-related behavioral disorders. Du often goes to the house of Mr. LQL (born in 1970, residing in Ngoc Chau ward, Hai Duong city) to drink alcohol with Mr. VXN (born in 1977, residing in Thanh Binh ward, Hai Duong city) and Mr. NVS (born in 1963, residing in Nguyen Trai ward, Hai Duong city).
At around 5:00 p.m. on May 6, 2023, Mr. N. drove Mr. S. to Mr. L.'s house to drink alcohol. When he arrived, Mr. S. knocked on the door but did not see Mr. L. open the door, so he left on foot. A while later, Du arrived on an electric bike.
At 6:00 p.m. the same day, Mr. L. and Mr. N. brought wine back to drink with Du at Mr. L.'s house. While drinking, a conflict arose between Mr. L. and Du. Mr. L. used a sandal to slap Du in the face about 4-5 times, and Du slapped Mr. L. in the face once. Mr. N. tried to stop them, so everyone continued drinking.
At 10:30 p.m. the same day, Mr. N. went home, while Mr. L. and Du were still drinking. Afterwards, due to being drunk, Du fell asleep on the sofa, while Mr. L. slept on the floor.
On the morning of May 7, 2023, Du and Mr. L. woke up, continued drinking and argued again. At around 7 o'clock, Mr. L. stood up, cursed and chased Du away. Out of anger, Du picked up a glass kettle and threw it at Mr. L. but missed. Du ran into the house, picked up a fruit knife from the floor and stabbed Mr. L. in the neck.
After stabbing Mr. L., Du saw Mr. L.'s phone on the chair, so he took the phone and left the scene on his electric bike.
After walking a short distance, Du stopped and took out his phone to call for help for Mr. L., but because he was drunk, he couldn't make the call. At 7:48 a.m. the same day, Du met someone and said: "Where is the police station?", "Someone was stabbed to death, there's blood everywhere, please call the police." This person pointed to the way to the police station.
After that, people discovered that Mr. L. had died and reported it to the police. Du returned to Mr. L.'s house, left his electric bike at the scene, and voluntarily went to the police station to surrender.
The jury sentenced Nguyen Van Du to life in prison for murder and three years in prison for robbery, for a combined sentence of life in prison.
