On December 24, the People's Court of An Giang province opened a first-instance trial of the criminal case against defendant Nguyen Van Nghia (29 years old, residing in My Hoa ward, Long Xuyen city, An Giang province) for arson and death.

According to the indictment, at around 6:00 p.m. on February 3, Ms. Le Thi My Le (54 years old, Nghia's biological mother, residing in My Hoa ward, Long Xuyen city) went to the house of Ms. Ho Thi Truc Linh (49 years old, residing in the same locality) to talk about money for playing a rotating savings and credit association, leading to an argument and a fight.

Hearing the news, at around 7pm that same day, Nghia had the idea of buying gasoline to burn down Ms. Linh's house to take revenge. Nghia bought 1 liter of gasoline and then rode his motorbike to Ms. Linh's house.

Seeing Mrs. Linh on fire, Nghia ran away but was stopped by the people, leading to a fight. Nghia fought back and escaped. Nghia then turned himself in to the Long Xuyen City Police.

Ms. Linh was taken to the emergency room by everyone, but on February 18, Ms. Linh passed away. Ly, Dao and Nhan suffered minor injuries.

The jury sentenced Nghia to death for "murder". At the same time, the defendant was ordered to compensate the victim's family 187 million VND.
