Although the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year has not yet ended, on the morning of December 3, nearly 3,000 candidates officially participated in the first round of thinking assessment exams to find opportunities for university admission in 2024.
The first round of the thinking assessment exam was held in 8 provinces and cities. In the photo: candidates taking the exam in Hanoi on the morning of December 3
This year, the thinking assessment exam organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the earliest exam to start, opening the exam season for university admission results in 2024.
In the first round of exams, candidates were divided into 107 exam rooms at 16 exam locations in 8 provinces and cities, including: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, and Da Nang.
At the Hanoi University of Science and Technology exam area, candidates taking the thinking assessment exam arrived at the exam site very early. Many candidates from Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Son La… returned to Hanoi a day in advance to prepare for the exam.
Many candidates said the reason for taking the thinking assessment test was to reduce pressure on themselves when applying for university admission in 2024.
At 5 a.m., when it was still dark and very cold, Ha Tien Dat, a 12th grade student at Van Lam High School (Hung Yen), and his sister went to Hanoi to attend the thinking assessment exam to "compete" for a place in university.
Dat said that since the beginning of grade 12, he started to practice for the thinking assessment test online, and practiced according to the types of questions that Hanoi University of Science and Technology published on the school's website. Although he took the test early, Dat said he was quite confident and in a relaxed mood.
"I chose to take the thinking assessment test to help me have more opportunities to get into top schools. If I put all my expectations on my high school graduation exam score, I would be under a lot of pressure, because even if I got 28-29 points, I still wouldn't be able to get into a hot major at a top school.
This time I took the exam mainly to experience the previous questions, from which I can build a more specific review schedule for myself. If the results are not good, I will continue taking the exam in the next rounds," Dat said.
After traveling nearly 200km and 6 hours on a bus, Nguyen Duy Duc, a 12th grader at Moc Chau High School (Son La), and his father went to Hanoi to take the aptitude test. Because his house is far away, Duc and his father went down a day early. In this exam, Duc set a goal of getting about 60 points to be admitted to the Mechanical Engineering School.
"I took the practice test and found it quite difficult. I was most confident in the physics section, but the chemistry and biology sections were a bit tough. This time I wanted to test my strength and consider the next ones. I felt very comfortable going into the exam," Duc shared.
In 2024, Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to organize 6 exam sessions, of which the last session will be on June 15 and 16, 2024. The exams will take place over two days on Saturday and Sunday to facilitate candidates.
The test assesses the candidate's overall skills.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien - Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology - said that in 2023, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has redesigned the overall thinking assessment test. Therefore, the structure of the thinking assessment test in 2024 remains stable as in 2023.
According to Mr. Dien, the first round of the 2024 thinking assessment exam was scheduled earlier than last year, to help candidates who were confident in their knowledge to take the exam. In addition, it helped candidates get familiar with how to do the test and how to allocate time. From the results of this exam, candidates can assess their current thinking ability to have a suitable review plan.
The structure of the test consists of 3 parts: mathematical thinking, reading comprehension and scientific thinking, in which the content of the test does not focus on testing knowledge of subjects, but focuses on assessing individual thinking abilities. In particular, the scientific thinking section no longer has the concept of subject combinations, in line with the content of the new high school program.
"Candidates should not take two exams close together because they will not improve their abilities and will have poor test results. Learning basic knowledge is very important. The exam is not 'tricky' but asks for a lot of broad knowledge. With a large number of questions and at 3 levels of thinking, candidates must be very urgent and have a good test-taking strategy," said Mr. Dien.
