SK Telecom, South Korea's largest carrier, said it will invest $100 million in US artificial intelligence company Anthropic to expand its operations in the AI field.

Anthropic is a research and safety startupartificial intelligence(AI) with products like the AI assistant Claude. The company was founded in 2021 by former members of OpenAI, the company behind the chatbot ChatGPT.

According to SK Telecom, the carrier plans to collaborate with Anthropic to develop an AI platform and large language model (LLM) that supports multiple languages, including Korean, English, German, and Japanese. Anthropic's chief scientist and co-founder Jared Kaplan will be in charge of developing the new LLM.

By teaming up with Anthropic, SK Telecom aims to strengthen its own LLM model to better serve customer needs. Last month, the carrier signed an agreement with three other telecoms companies, Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel, to form the Telco AI Alliance.

The alliance's mission is to “accelerate the AI transformation of existing telecommunications businesses and create new business opportunities using AI services.”

SK Telecom said the new partnership with Anthropic will help accelerate multi-stakeholder efforts to develop the Telco AI Platform. CEO Ryu Young Sang made no secret of his ambition to take a “leading role” in the AI ecosystem based on SK Telecom’s own AI technology and Anthropic’s global competitiveness.

Three months ago, Anthropic raised $450 million in a Series C funding round led by Spark Capital. Software company SAP also invested in Anthropic in July 2023.
