The Korean Ministry of National Defense is promoting defense innovation in the direction of Industry 4.0, bringing artificial intelligence to support military operations.
South Korea's Defense Ministry has established a research center to oversee the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the defense sector, Yonhap reported on April 1, as part of efforts to introduce advanced technologies into the military.
The ceremony to establish the Defense AI Center took place at the Agency for Defense Development in Daejeon, with Defense Minister Shin Won-sik and Science Minister Lee Jong-ho in attendance, according to Minister Shin Won-sik's office.
The move is part of South Korea's Defense 4.0 innovation initiative, which aims to make the military smarter through AI and other advanced technologies.
The center, which will employ about 110 civilian and military personnel, will focus on developing technologies related to AI-based manned and unmanned systems. This will help identify battlefield situations, as well as apply AI technology in the civilian sector to the military.
The two ministers also signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in key technology areas needed for future battlefields, such as AI, semiconductors, space and cyberspace.
According to the memorandum, the two sides will promote research and development to enhance cooperation between the private sector and the military.
