Farmers in Kinh Mon (Hai Duong) are making efforts to preserve and promote the value of yellow sticky rice. The specialty is considered the 'golden grain' of the locality.
This year's crop, Kinh Mon town planted nearly 700 hectares of yellow sticky rice, concentrated in the communes and wards of Duy Tan, Hoanh Son, Tan Dan, Pham Thai... Although storm No. 3 caused rice yield to decrease, the current selling price of rice has increased compared to the previous crop by 4,000-8,000 VND/kg.
The advantages of climate, land, water resources, along with intensive farming experience, application of technical advances from seed selection to harvesting and processing have helped Kinh Mon farmers know how to preserve and care for fragrant golden sticky rice. The rice grains are round, plump, smooth, and unbroken. When cooked, they are soft, chewy, delicious, and have high nutritional value.
Kinh Mon's golden sticky rice has a collective trademark called "Kinh Mon golden sticky rice". The product has also been given a product code by the General Department of Standards, Metrology and Quality. In 2017, the local golden sticky rice was voted as the golden agricultural brand of Vietnam. Thanks to that, this type of rice is consumed stably, and its price is always higher than other types of sticky rice.
To preserve and promote the value of the specialty rice variety, Kinh Mon Town People's Committee coordinated with the Vietnam Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants and the French National Institute for Agricultural Development to successfully preserve and restore the yellow sticky rice variety, thereby replicating the farming model in many localities.
Many enterprises, cooperatives, and business households in the town have chosen yellow sticky rice to develop their brands, applying production, harvesting, preliminary processing, packaging, and deep processing processes to promote, consume, and enhance the value of local agricultural products. Many products processed from this "golden grain" have dominated the market, such as Phuong Khiem yellow sticky rice wine; sticky corn wine, An Sinh Vuong yellow sticky rice...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, owner of Mac Dinh Trung production facility in Duy Tan ward, shared: "Each year, the facility supplies more than 100 tons of finished rice. The facility's golden sticky rice has been recognized as OCOP in 2023 and is popular with consumers."
Kinh Mon Golden Flower Sticky Rice and products made from this rice are increasingly appearing in many booths, fairs, and exhibitions inside and outside the province. In particular, the product is consumed favorably during the Lunar New Year every year. Currently, the product is sold at a price of 35,000-40,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Thuong, Head of the Town's Economic Department, said: "To preserve and promote the value of the local traditional yellow sticky rice variety, in recent years the town has supported people with seeds and agricultural materials; guided the production process, encouraged businesses, cooperatives, and joint groups to improve product quality, carry out deep processing, access the market, and promote products...".
Over the years, yellow sticky rice has become a typical gift of the region and has increasingly affirmed its brand. This is also the motivation for Kinh Mon people to stick together, preserve and promote the value of their local precious rice variety.
