On September 27, Kia inaugurated the first electric vehicle factory of Hyundai Gwangmyeong Group.
The Kia Gwangmyeong EVO is Hyundai Motor Group’s first plant to exclusively produce electric vehicles, with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles. It will produce the new Kia EV3 and EV4 electric vehicles.
Kia invested $304.2 million in the 60,000-square-foot facility, rebuilding on an existing factory site to facilitate production of the company's next-generation vehicles.
Mass production of the EV3, the brand’s small electric SUV, began in the first half of this year. After taking pre-orders for the EV3 in South Korea in June, starting at $30,700, Kia received more than 10,000 orders in just 23 days. The company calls the EV3 a “game changer” in its home market.
In Europe, the Korean brand's new electric car starts at around $40,000 with a range of 599 km per charge, according to the WLTP standard.
Kia will begin production of its first electric sedan, the EV4, in the first half of 2025. The company says the EV4 is a “completely new form of electric sedan.”
Like the EV3, the EV4 sedan will follow the design and technology of the company's flagship EV9. The EV4 is expected to start at $35,000-$40,000, with deliveries scheduled for 2025.
