The Korean car company is recalling nearly 75,000 of the latest KIA Sorento models due to a software error that causes the front and rear lighting systems to turn off without warning.

About 75,000 KIA Sorento cars have a problem with sudden loss of headlights and taillights while driving.

Recently, KIA had to issue a recall order for more than 74,469 Sorento vehicles from the 2024-2025 model years because the headlights and taillights can automatically turn off while driving. According to documents submitted to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Korean automaker said the problem originated from a "software logic error" in the body control system (BCM).

In certain cases, this may cause the headlights and taillights to temporarily lose their signal. While KIA North America has not received any customer complaints about the lighting system malfunction, this is a serious safety issue that could increase the risk of an accident.

The U.S. government also noted that these models do not comply with federal safety standards related to lighting systems. Of the nearly 75,000 KIA Sorento vehicles recalled, the majority are non-hybrids at 63,782, with 8,937 being standard hybrid vehicles (HEVs) and 1,750 being plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

To fix the problem, KIA dealers will install updated software for the BCM system free of charge, and recall notices will be sent to vehicle owners next February.
