According to VNA October 2, 2023 12:30

On October 2, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced that the Shin-Hanul No. 2 nuclear reactor in the south of the country began a six-month test run before fully operating the system in March next year.

Located in the coastal county of Uljin, 215 km southeast of Seoul, the Shin-Hanul No. 2 reactor was completed in April 2022. After being approved by the Korea Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, the Shin-Hanul No. 2 reactor was fueled and put into test operation last week. This is the 28th nuclear reactor in Korea, with a power generation capacity of 1,400 MW, using APR1400 technology with a long life and reasonable cost.

In December 2022, the country put the Shin-Hanul No. 1 reactor into commercial operation. The South Korean Ministry of Industry said it is preparing to launch the project to build the Shin-Hanul No. 3 and No. 4 reactors after approval from relevant agencies, aiming to increase total nuclear power output by more than 30% by 2030.

The government of President Yoon Suk Yeol has reversed the nuclear phase-out plan of the previous government and is pushing to increase nuclear power to better manage electricity demand and see it as a key export growth engine.

South Korea has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2018 levels by 2030 and achieve net neutrality by 2050.
